Week Four: Best Of 2010

Bells: Random, But Worth It
These four songs have been regulars on my iTunes this year. They're songs you can enjoy, get down to, love, hate, cherish, and just bloody blast whenever the moment strikes.
I chose Sam Tsui's mashup of "Love the Way You Lie" because these songs have been really... uh... salient for me this year, especially recently. "Fireworks" radio on Pandora is the closest I've come to delving into mainstream music this year and I actually enjoyed most of the songs on there. This mashup is done really well by the YouTube sensation Sam Tsui and I usually try to find some YouTube cover of a song when I want to play it on the radio. This one turns out to be perfect so I hope you really enjoy it.
I definitely started exploring the artist Lykke Li this year. There's this one section of her wesbite called Novels that I love. It's basically everyone sharing thoughts, Lykke Li herself included, on different subjects she finds pertinent to herself. I've really enjoyed looking more into what she's doing and putting out into the world, from her videos to her songs, and I think she's doing a lot of really amazing stuff. And this song, "Get Some," is pretty brilliant. So enjoy it.
A secret goal of mine is to always play a song from a certain sound track series and Battles' "The Line" is that song for me this time. I think it sounds so interesting and the music is schweet. Just love on it, ok?
My last song is Christina Perri's "Jar Of Hearts," which I literally found out yesterday was mainstream. Sorry about that, super hardcore indie people. I first heard this song months ago, so it was kind of a shocker to be driving back from Home Depot with 20 brooms for Quidditch and hear a song I was so sure was this awesome little find. But I guess everyone found it too. Good for you, world. You've got some kickin' music taste.

Week Two: A Clumsy Reappearance

JEZLI: Living with a Bittersweet Heart:

While musing over some recent heartbreaks, I stumbled upon the genius that is Zee Avi, a Malaysian singer-songwriter with the voice of a classic French songstress accompanied by a hipster on the uke. But lovely singing aside, I just love the lighthearted way she describes her "bitter heart" in the song off which I've based this playlist. Hopefully I've captured that dual-handed sweet and sour in these songs!

"Cry Baby" by Cee-Lo Gree
"Sweet Disposition" by The Temper Trap
"Gravity" by Sara Bareilles
"Bitter Heart" by Zee Avi
"Playground Love" by Air
"La Vie en Rose" by Louis Armstrong
"Dance Me to the End of Love" by The Civil Wars
"Woolen Blankets" by The Republic of Wolves
"Bruises" by Chairlift
"Fake Plastic Trees" by Amanda Palmer
**"The Limit to Your Love" by Feist
**"Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" by Bright Eyes

Mooney: Lyrical Lunar Love
This mix may, in fact, be as close to perfect as a sleepy-late-night playlist can get. Combining the beautiful beats from The Xx cover of Florence's "You've Got The Love" with the magical melodies coming from Tennis, Bear Hands, Real Estate, and Paper Fangs, with the voices of Murder by Death and Laura Marling, make an exquisite soundtrack that can't be beat.

Bells: I'm Effing Tired, Why Did I Do This Again
This mix was going to be me playing a cd because I was too tired to come up with anything useful for my 35 minutes of music this week. Plus I just got it from the Resale Shop and I think it's really cool and I just really wanted to listen to it. Due to the incessant pleas from my two co-Dj's I recreated an on-the-spot non-music-guideline-following playlist off Grooveshark. I kind of can't remember what I played, but Jezli's defiance of the station's music guidelines inspired me as she's usually the one who bites my head off about following procedural protocol.

I did play this "Where Is My Mind?" cover I heard while I watched It's Kind of a Funny Story last week.

Week Eight: Potterwatch

Potterwatch:
I don't think anything could ever quite match the awesomeness of this show. This will go down in history as by far one of the best things I've ever done-- base an entire show around the Potterwatch scene from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows just in time for the newest movie to come out. I think the only you can really do to get the EPICNESS of this show is to simply download it and listen to it. Which I shall be doing countless times throughout my life.

ADVERTISE:
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, of course. Coming to a theatre near you!!

RECOMMEND:
Finding anything Wizard Rock on the YouTube and making sure your midnight showing tickets are with you when you head out to the theatre this Thursday night!!

Week Six: A Sound, A Cycle

A Sound, A Cycle:
This week's show was based primarily off of three songs that I've been into--

"The High Road" by Broken Bells
"Lives" by Modest Mouse (I like the Pokemon background for this song. HOT!)
"She's Got My Number" by Semisonic

Sometimes, I love having an iPod where I don't know a good portion of the music. When I put it on shuffle, it's like a really good radio station. It plays things I love, things I'm getting into, and music that I've never heard before but definitely love. Except when it decides to play facking John Mayer. I hate it when it does that and it makes me want to kill it.

Anyway, these three songs have been my current favorites, so I simply tried to make a playlist that flowed with these songs. It was a lot harder that I expected because all three songs have such different quirks to them and I wasn't prepared for them. But I think it turned out alright--could be refined, not as seemless as I would like it to be, but it's got some new music for me and you to find more out about.

I almost decided to play a mix of Halloween music to draw out yesterday's awesomeness, but I decided against it for all of your sake. You can thank me with Halloween candy and hugs!

Pains Of Being Pure At Heart -- Thursday, November 11th, 2010 9PM at The LOFT
Who doesn't want to be as giddy as a school girl? If Pains of Being Pure at heart can provide you with the same excitement without having to still go to math class, this show is most definitely worth attending.

Tim Kasher -- Saturday, November 13th, 2010 830PM at The LOFT
Renowned for his literate, lyrical, and thematic songwriting, Kasher’s albums with Cursive and The Good Life have been praised by key press, including Rolling Stone, Esquire, The New York Times, Alternative Press, Spin, and Entertainment Weekly, among many others. Kasher has been an acclaimed force in music for the better part of the past two decades. And, with his bands, he has released ten albums since 1997.
