Week Five: A Fifth of Female-Fronted

INTRODUCING:
Last week I went pretty crazy in creating my female singers playlist. I didn't really how much amazing female-led music I have, but that's not surprising to me considering my iPod is a mass vomit of all of my friend's music and I don't know half of what's on there. But it's all good because I look into it and YOU get to benefit from it! Yay!

This week's show was based less on powerful rock vocals, but more about female voices that really compliment the more techno-ish music they're set against. You'll probably listen to this and be like "This music isn't techno whatsoever." and I'll say "You know I have no idea how to describe music, and these are more techno-y than last week's so... shut up and just like it."

Yeah, you should like it. Because these songs are awesome.

Fifth of Female-Fronted:
To get you in the mood as courteously as I can, I started with The Bird & The Bee's "Polite Dance Song." I love how funky this song is. And I like how it's almost satirizing rap songs where they constantly shout at you "PUT YOUR HANDS UP, MOTHERF**KERS!" (see UCSD's Fall Fest 2009). Plus, the video is freaking amazing! Lead singer Inara George's voice is seductive and persuasive. You really want to do everything she asks you to do, even if it's not that polite.

I love the opening of Nouvelle Vague's "Ever Fallen In Love." It's spicy and I love the little Spanish flair it has to it. I'm a big fan of maracas and tambourines, since they're just about the only instruments I can play (although I swear though if I had some bongos, I could totally rock out on those). Melanie Pain's featured vocals on this Buzzcock's cover curls around and cozies up to each and every syllable, making you fall in love. She fits in with the jazzy music, complementing the light and childish sound with her vocals and laughter.

Charlotte Sometimes was introduced to me by my good friend, Ashtyn Street (and really, I need to look into almost every single band she gave me because 2 years after that three-part mix cd extravaganza, I still love every song on it), and I continue to love this song so long after first hearing it. Ms. Sometimes, aka Jessica Poland, has incredible vocals and an interesting past behind them. Even after facial reconstructive surgery to save her from a debilitating disease, she can still sing with the best of them and looks HOT as well!

In "Bruises," Chairlift's Caroline Polachek plays with her voices is melodic and delightful way. The song has sexual implications, but her voice brings a fun innocence to this song that comes a long way from the intended purpose of haunted house background music (the band's original intent) that I absolutely adore. The interaction between the two singers tells a story of an interesting form of love that really makes me want frozen strawberries!

Pomplamoose is something I discovered while flicking through iTunes and I pretty much listened to thier music for hours afterwards. I love their techno covers and Nataly's voice is supreme in all of them. Highly recommend them to everyone because they have a song covered that will entice anyone's interest. I chose to include this song because I felt I couldn't have a female heavy playlist without a nod to Lady Gaga, current queen of the female pop world.

Man, who thought you'd ever hear The Cardigans on KSDT? Seriously, the band hasn't even updated their website since 2004. Well, it just so happens I play loose and fast with the music rules and am always praying to God that my obtuse interest in 90's music will be listened to with acceptance and love. Anyway, Swedish sensation Nina Persson ethereal voice sinches this into classic status and I'll say that I love her!

Is it a secret of mine that I always attempt to play a song from a particular... collection of music in all of my radio shows. If you can guess it, which if you know me you should get it instantaneously, and this song is one from that collection. Metric's Emily Haines personifies beauty with her voice and the when she says that she is all yours, you have to believe her. The sincerity drips throughout the song and makes it one of my favorite love songs.

"Say Goodnight and Go" is my go-to crush song. It always perfects any crush-emotions I get because I usually crush on my best guy friends (they're just always so amazing, what can I say?). This song just says it all. And Imogen Heap is not only beautiful, she's willing to express whatever it is she wants in her style and music. She's not afraid to be herself and that strength is something you can see her in music. Her style is unique and playful and I just love it.

This song by Sia is sexy, sultry delicious. It can be listened to anytime, anywhere--take your pick, my darlings.

"I'm Good, I'm Gone" starts out so funky. I didn't expect it at all when I first heard it. I don't know much of Lykke Li's stuff, but what I have heard, I love! She's creative and crazy and is willing to try out so much with her music and voice. Plus, she seems just super crazy and amazing. Watch her "Hustlin'" video. It's one of my favorite songs by her.

Little Jackie was also first introuduced to me by my friend Ashtyn. She gave me this song, "Crying For The Queen," which I'm pretty sure is about Amy Winehouse and all those dunkard British bitches who come to America. It's hilarious and catchy. And patriotic, while simultaneously bashing the state of our country. It's a perfect combination of so much epicness.

I was first introduced to ska as a freshman in high school (iTunes classifies "All Star" by Smash Mouth as ska, but I really don't buy into that at all.) through my old friend Emelia. She made me a mix cd of Suburban Legends, Ozma, etc, and Save Ferris. I instantly fell in love with their cover of "Come On Eileen." It's a classic song to begin with and her voice is heaven. I absolutely love anything Monqiue Powell sings.

Blondie's album Parallel Lines always brings me back to one specific memory with my dad. I've been trying to get my hands on this album ever since then, but it somehow eludes me every single time. I recently thought about it this summer while I was in this amazing record shop called Nuggets in Boston and lo and behold they had it.

NOTES:
Currently keeping a steady stream of 10 listeners! My best yet! And my cousin couldn't get on, so that means I would've had 11. Yes. Hopefully they continue to rise. I have more right now than either Jezli and I got it. Shoot, I am awesome. Conceited points.

Week Four: A Fourth Of Female-Fronted

INTRODUCING:
Josh and I had dinner this weekend and he was talking to me about the Pixies concert he went to. Which I am jealous, but I wasn't jealous enough to go and see them. I'm not as dedicated as he is to them. He told me also told me about Kim Deal's second band The Breeders. I was sure I had heard of them, and indeed, I found their song "Bang On" nicely placed in my iTunes library.

This playlist is based around their awesomeness.

A Fourth Of Female-Fronted:
"Bang On" by The Breeders: I love no one, and no one loves me.
"Barracuda" by Heart: Always an amazing song.
"Cherry Bomb" by The Runaways: First band of Joan Jett
"Gimme Shelter" by Patti Smith: Crazy cover of deliciousness. One of my favorite songs on Rock Band.
"Piece Of My Heart" by Janis Joplin: You cannot have a female-fronted rock band playlist without including the very best, Ms. Joplin.
"Nothing But A Miracle" by Diane Birch: Newer to the scene, but vocals that come straight from the gospel choir.
"My Best Dress" by Florence And The Machine: Making my world go round.
"Edge Of Seventeen" by Stevie Nicks: Reminds me of Joan Cusack and I aspire to be Stevie.
"Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) by Nancy Sinatra: 1000 times better on vinyl.
"Sea Of Love" by Cat Power: I'm drowning.
"Tears For Affairs" by Camera Obscura: Enjoy.
"Sentimental Heart" by She & Him: I'm obsessed with Deschanel.
"I Never" by Rilo Kiley: Vocals will blow your mind. Classic and quintessential.
"Ain't Never Been Cool" by Lucky Soul: I haven't, but thanks for making me feel better.
"Gigantic" by Pixies: Kim deal rocking the Pixies.

RECOMMEND:
Reading about Diane Birch and discovering her if you haven't already.

Week Three: Summer Never Lasts

INTRODUCING:
One of my very good friends, Mr. Andrew Jackson, came to visit me recently and I miss him a lot. He was in Los Angeles all summer working with Roswick and we could barely see each other, but we planned on doing tons together when I finally went back down south for school. Two weeks before I left for school, Mr. Andrew Jackson decided to move back to Redding to work as a music engineer at The Soundhouse. This was ok, as we two brilliant weeks together and he was/is super duper happy, but I miss him. The presidential hole that resides in my hear has not been filled by his presence. So, this very quickly and poorly made playlist (Sorry, it's my first one in awhile, get off my back, I was rushed, JEEEEEEZ) is dedicated to him and all those out there missing someone back home. (Actually, Miss You is really the song most dedicated to him and what the whole playlist was based around. I cannot stop listening to Between The Trees).

Summer Never Lasts:
"What Part Of Forever" by Cee Lo Green
I forgot Cee Lo Green has really made it onto the scene with his "Fuck You" song. But this song's sound summarizes summer and feels like lemonade on a hot day.

"Time Is A Runaway" by The Alternate Routes
This song is just good. And reminds us that time keeps moving forward, even when we want it to stand still and last forever.

"I Lost You" by The Walkmen
I wish you were still along / I waited a long time / All for you / I waited a long time / I lost you.

"Life On Earth" by Band Of Horses
Life on Earth is changing / Life on Earth is ending / And time on Earth is ending / And time on Earth is changing.

"Combination Kept Memories" by Daniel Harrington
Written and performed by talented musician Daniel, I'm proud to say I know this guy and that not only is he good in music, he's good in heart. It shows through in his music and I highly recommend checking him out. Whenever he gets his cd ready for worldwide for mass consumption, I'll link it for you.

"Your Long Journey" by Alison Krauss & Robert Plant
I have a penchant for songs with acoustic guitars that should be played on an open in Tennessee. I think I'm meant for Nashville.

"Bring It On Home" by She & Him
I'm obsessed with Deschanel.

"If You Forget Me..." by Devics
I discovered this band in the midst of KSDT's huge music selection. Really need to look more into their music collection. They've got a vinyl collection I melt over.

"Goodbyes Are Sad" by Starflyer 59
Goodbyes are sad/ You're the best that I wish I had / To wait a million more

"Yesterday We Had It All" by Hundred Year Storm
Be strong and take heart / And tell me / You'l never let go

"Winter" by Joshua Radin
I could have lost myself / In rough blue waters in your eyes / And I miss you still / Oh, I remember the sound / Of your November downtown / And I remember the truth / A warm December with you

"No Sound But The Wind" by Editors
This is one of my most played songs. I think it is beautiful and an ultimate romantic.

"Miss You" by Between The Trees
For you, Andrew. I wanna stand next to you for awhile.

"Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) [8/25/2010]" by American Idiot Broadway Cast
This summer playlist closes with a song from one of my favorite experiences of the summer and of my life--seeing American Idiot on Broadway. I know you may not like the album, it's been overplayed, but this play is really amazing. Gives a whole new meaning to "Wake Me Up When September Ends" and I'll never be able to think of the song in the same way again. This song is the encore from the actual performance I saw.

Hope you enjoy, little darlings.

ADVERTISE:
Nevershoutnever! and The Maine are playing at The House of Blues. I would go, if someone had a car. Please take me.

RECOMMEND:
Anything off of Between The Tree's album Spain. It is my current obsession.
